Economic Statecraft

War By Other Ledgers, the annual Economic Statecraft Summit and related analysis on how the United States can wield economic power.

Overview

Economics is a lever of national power which has evolved into an active operational domain of modern global competition and warfare. The Institute's War By Other Ledgers series of articles and webinars draws attention to how the US can and should wield economic power to compete, coerce and deter in an increasingly contested global order.

The edited volume War By Other Ledgers brings together practitioners and scholars from government, the military, industry, academia and partner nations to clarify contemporary economic statecraft challenges and offer practical ideas for its future.

In October 2025 the Institute and Texas A&M University's Bush School of Government and Public Service hosted the Fifth Annual Summit on Economic Statecraft, “Navigating a Reset of the Global Economic Order.”

Leveraging Strength in Economic Statecraft

There was once a time when it was assumed that China would move toward liberal democratic institutions and, with that, pursue a more open capitalist economy. This assumption was based on the argument that as China grew richer through capital investment and market-driven economic expansion, its population’s values and outlook would become more Westernized.
